I have been using barenbrug's green spirit Italian ryegrass for 5 years. In the second year it goes to seed pretty easily even in managed grazing and some of that seed will sprout and help renew the stand. The drawback is there is still lots of mature grass. We are in New Mexico and flood irrigate, which isn't ideal; I would think more seed would make it under a sprinkler or in a wetter environment. When the grass makes seed it makes a lot so I can't see actually buying that much seed to broadcast and imitate what is happening with our second-year grass, but I do think an economical amount could be broadcast and worked in with hoof action with good results. Along this line, I have a question also. This year's planting of Green spirit has gone to seed more than in the past. The story on Italian is it won't go to seed in the first year. We have always seen a little seed production which I attributed to the grass getting a little frost soon after planting. Some years I get it in by the end of April which is not yet past frost free date, and we have even had snow on sprouting grass. But this year I was well after last frost before the grass got started, and have gotten lots of grass making seedhead. The seed label lists what I believe may be a different blend than what we've had in the past. Anyone else with similar experience?
