A combination of 1/3 hay 2/3 balage (as long balage is 40 to 50% dry matter) works well. You could even go to 80% balage. Always remember that the calculation of dry matter intake on 4% of animal's weight accounts for a little waste. And, keep in mind that balage has then 60 to 50% water. If intake is above 3%, gains should be better than 1.3 lb/d. Are you sure the calculations of supply are made removing the water supplied by the balage?. Anyway, relaying on balage for the last gains is quite a challenge.
