We just weighed our cattle several days ago and we're averaging 1.3 lbs ADG and would like to increase this to 1.7 lbs ADG if reasonably possible. We're about 20 miles south of the 45th Parallel (Western Wisconsin) and lately our daily highs have been about 10 degrees and overnight lows about 5-10 degrees below zero (Fahrenheit). I've been using 0.04% body weight to calculate the amount of DM to feed the cattle. I alternate equally between dry alfalfa bales and alfalfa balage, all dairy quality feed ( RFV of 150-200 ). Right now I'm thinking I need to increase the amount of balage I'm feeding. How much balage is too much ? Oh yeah - one last note.. we don't feed any grain as we're producing for Thousand Hills Cattle Co. as well as some direct marketing. Regards, Vic
