In your experiences, what type of pastures/forages are used when managing the cow/calf portion of the herd that is presumably going to grass finished? Are they typically raised on another farm where the land is of lower quality compared to what finishing animals are on or is the leader/follower regimen used? I realize that the cows can eat some pretty lousy feed, but dont we still have to manage this group of animals so they can produce enough milk, have a decent BCS to breed back and carry the calf thru the winter? Is high energy perennial pasture the typical route?
