It is going to be difficult to hit gourmet quality all the time. I thnk a good preserved forages and supplement combinations could be: 1. Alfalfa hay/wheat middlings (+a touch of molasses) 2. Alfalfa haylage/wheat middlings 3. Pasture (white clover+ryegrass or brome)/wheat middlings or a non-starch highly digestible supplement (the greater the energy content the better) + molasses. 4. Energy supplements + vaccum packed silages Mixes of about 50:50 of all these combinations would give 1.2 to 1.8 lb/day in young cattle which would be enough for quality consistency. Non restricted intake is very important. We need to estimate the intake level ondry matter basis. If stockers are eating above 3% of their body weight in a consistant basis, and they are no walking excessively, most likely they are gaining well.
