Cattle in cold climates in Argentina are mostly Hereford and Shorthorns, no so much Angus. The strategy for grazing stockers is to select for a small frame (below 4) and plan on weaning late to put as much weight as possible during spring and summer on native ranges and/or irrigated pastures. If finishing takes place in fall, spring hay and energy supplements are needed. As alternative, some go with the steers thru the winter in a restriction strategy and finish on the second spring/summer. No much is fed out in winter because of costs. Most places would try e restriction phase or finshing early at light weights during the first spring and summer. I your situation, I would encourage to setup a system that weans late and feed the cow and calf on conserved forages and then finish the calf the first summer (light weight) to avoid entering winter with a load of fairly heavy steers.
